Frequently Asked Questions
This is actually a bigger deal than most tea drinkers realize. Many commercial flavored teas use artificial or "nature-identical" flavorings, which are compounds synthesized in a lab to mimic natural tastes. They're cheaper to produce and have a longer shelf life, but the flavor tends to be one-dimensional and less balanced.
Natural flavors, by FDA definition, must come from actual plant or food sources like fruits, herbs, spices, or botanicals. The extraction process involves distilling essential oils or extracting compounds from the real thing. For example, natural bergamot flavor comes from the actual bergamot orange, while artificial bergamot is a chemical approximation that never touched an actual citrus fruit.
DRUERA uses only natural flavors in their teas. Their Vanilla Tea is infused with real vanilla beans, their Earl Grey gets its citrus notes from actual bergamot, and their Cardamom Tea uses aromatic green cardamom. The difference shows up in your cup. Naturally flavored teas tend to have more complexity and depth. The bergamot in a naturally flavored Earl Grey has floral undertones alongside the citrus that artificial versions simply can't replicate. The vanilla notes in a naturally flavored tea have warmth and richness rather than the flat sweetness of synthetic vanillin.
According to Wikipedia, "many, if not most, Earl Greys use artificial bergamot flavor as this is cheaper and has a longer shelf life," but "the taste of artificially flavored teas is considered to be less well-balanced than that of naturally flavored Earl Grey." When you're paying for quality loose leaf Ceylon tea, you want natural flavoring to match.
The quality difference is substantial, and it starts with what's actually inside.
Tea bags typically contain "fannings" and "dust," which are the tiny particles left over after whole tea leaves are processed and graded. These broken bits have lost much of their essential oils and aromatic compounds during processing. They release flavor quickly, which is convenient, but that flavor tends to be harsher and more bitter because the broken leaves release tannins faster.
Loose leaf tea contains whole or large unbroken leaves. When you steep them, they have room to expand and unfurl, releasing their flavors gradually. This creates a more complex, nuanced cup with less bitterness. The larger surface area means the tea's essential oils stay intact until brewing, so you get the full aromatic experience.
For flavored teas specifically, this matters even more. The flavoring agents need quality tea leaves to complement them. Cheap, dusty tea overpowered by artificial flavoring is a very different experience than premium Ceylon black tea leaves that have been carefully paired with natural vanilla, bergamot, or cardamom.
DRUERA's flavored teas are all loose leaf, shipped directly from Ceylon. The tea leaves are premium quality, and because they use natural flavoring rather than heavy-handed artificial additives, you can actually taste both the tea and the flavor working together. As a bonus, loose leaf tea can often be steeped multiple times, so you get more cups from your purchase. Tea bags are typically one-and-done.
All three teas in this collection are based on Ceylon black tea, which means they contain caffeine. A typical 8-ounce cup of black tea has around 40 to 70 mg of caffeine, compared to roughly 95 mg in a cup of coffee. This makes them a good choice if you want an energy boost without the intensity (or potential jitters) of coffee.
Earl Grey deserves special mention because of its bergamot content. Research has shown some interesting potential benefits from bergamot, including effects on cholesterol levels. Studies have found that bergamot extract can lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol while supporting HDL ("good") cholesterol through a mechanism different from standard cholesterol medications. Black tea itself has been associated with blood pressure regulation and cardiovascular benefits.
The caffeine in tea also works differently than coffee caffeine. Tea contains L-theanine, an amino acid that promotes calm, focused alertness. L-theanine moderates caffeine's effects, so you're less likely to experience the jittery feeling some people get from coffee. Studies have linked tea consumption to improved focus, memory, and information processing.
A few practical notes: Steep your tea for 3 to 5 minutes. Shorter steeping produces milder flavor and slightly less caffeine. Longer steeping extracts more caffeine and can make the tea bitter. Earl Grey is traditionally served without milk (the bergamot pairs well with the tea on its own), though many people enjoy it with a splash of milk or a slice of lemon. The Vanilla Tea is naturally sweet-tasting and often doesn't need sugar. The Cardamom Tea has a warming, spiced character that works wonderfully on cold mornings or as an afternoon pick-me-up.
