Product discription

Nutmeg with the shell protects the spice during storage and allows for fresher flavor when grated

Nutmeg with the shell is mainly purchased by savvy consumers who wish to hold the space for an extended period and only crack the shell just before use.

DRUERA markets Nutmeg with shells in 4 oz and 16 oz pack sizes, which can be purchased online by clicking the arrow pointing down next to the pack size.

Nutmeg is grown in the hilly country of central Ceylon. Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) is a native of Moluccas in east Indonesia and is reported to have been introduced to Sri Lanka in the early nineteenth century. It's a spreading evergreen tree 15-20 m high.

Flowers are generally unisexual, but bisexual flowers also occur. Occasional trees with male and female flowers are seen in plantations. Fruits are fleshy drupes that turn yellow when ripe and split into two halves, exposing a purplish brown shiny seed surrounded by a net-like red aril called Mace.

The nutmeg tree yields two spices: Nutmeg, which is the kernel of the seed, and mace, which is the net-like crimson-colored leathery outgrowth (aril) covering the shell of the seed. Our Spices are grown in the wild and, as such, could be considered organic. They are free of pesticides and herbicides.

Why would I choose nutmeg with shell instead of without?

The shell acts as nature's protective packaging. It seals in the essential oils and aromatic compounds, keeping the nutmeg kernel fresher for much longer during storage.

Savvy buyers who want to stock up or hold nutmeg for extended periods choose the with-shell option because they can crack the shell just before use, ensuring maximum freshness and flavor every time.

It's also typically more economical than shell-free nutmeg.

How do I crack the shell to get to the nutmeg inside?

The shell is relatively easy to crack. You can use a nutcracker, the flat side of a knife, or even gently tap it with a hammer or heavy object.

The shell will split to reveal the nutmeg kernel inside, which you can then grate as needed.

It is recommended to only crack each Nutmeg just before use.

How long will nutmeg with shell stay fresh?

Nutmeg with the shell intact can stay fresh for up to 2 years when stored in a cool, dry place.

The shell protects the kernel from air, light, and moisture, all of which degrade the essential oils over time.

Customers from the Netherlands have mentioned loving DRUERA nutmeg with shell "for many years" because the taste remains wonderful.

Once you crack the shell, use the kernel within a reasonable timeframe or store it properly.

Is this nutmeg organic?

DRUERA nutmeg is grown wild in the hill country of central Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and is free of pesticides and herbicides.

While it may not carry official organic certification, the wild-grown nature of these spices means they are cultivated without synthetic chemicals.

The nutmeg trees grow naturally in Sri Lanka's ideal climate, producing high-quality spice without agricultural interventions.

What sizes are available, and which should I choose?

DRUERA offers two sizes: 4 oz (114g) and 1 lb (453g). If you're new to using whole nutmeg or only use it occasionally, the 4 oz size is a good starting point.

If you cook frequently, bake during the holidays, or want to take advantage of the extended shelf life that the shell provides, the 1 lb size offers better value and ensures you'll have fresh nutmeg on hand for years.

Where does this nutmeg come from, and how quickly will it arrive?

This nutmeg is grown in the hill country of central Sri Lanka (Ceylon). The nutmeg tree was introduced to Sri Lanka from its native Moluccas in Indonesia in the early nineteenth century.

Orders ship directly from Sri Lanka and typically arrive within 3-7 days with online tracking.

Customers from Australia, the Netherlands, and the United States have praised both the excellent product quality and the reliable service.
