What makes DRUERA's cloves "hand-picked" grade?

DRUERA sells only the highest grade of cloves produced in Sri Lanka, called "Hand Picked Cloves."

This means each clove is individually selected by hand to ensure it has an intact head attached to the stem, which indicates proper maturity and maximum oil content.

Lower grades may include broken pieces, stems without heads, or cloves harvested at the wrong time.

Hand-picked cloves are more fragrant, more pungent, and have a better appearance than machine-harvested or lower-grade alternatives.

How should I use whole cloves in cooking?

Whole cloves are incredibly versatile. In savory dishes, stud them into ham, add them to pot roasts, curries, rice dishes like biryani, or include them in spice blends like garam masala.

For desserts, they're wonderful in apple pie, pumpkin dishes, and spiced cookies.

In drinks, add them to mulled wine, apple cider, chai tea, or hot toddies. A little goes a long way because of their intense flavor.

You can use them whole (removing before serving) or grind them fresh for more even flavor distribution.

Why do Ceylon cloves have such a strong reputation?

Sri Lanka (Ceylon) has been famous for its spices for centuries, so much so that the island's spice trade attracted Arab traders, Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonizers throughout history.

Ceylon cloves come from the mountainous central hills around Kandy, where the climate and soil conditions produce exceptionally fragrant and pungent cloves.

The buds are hand-picked at least four times per year when they're at peak maturity, then sun-dried for several days until they turn from pink to rich brown.

Are these cloves organic?

While not formally certified organic, DRUERA's cloves are grown in the wild in Sri Lanka and could be considered organic. They're free of pesticides and herbicides.

The wild-grown nature and traditional harvesting methods mean you're getting cloves as close to their natural state as possible, without the chemical inputs common in large-scale commercial farming operations.

What sizes are available, and how long do whole cloves last?

DRUERA offers four sizes: 1 oz (29g) in a convenient shaker for everyday use, 4 oz (114g), 8 oz (227g), and 1 lb (453g) for heavy users or those who want the best value.

Whole cloves retain their flavor and potency much longer than ground cloves. When stored properly in an airtight container in a cool, dark place, whole cloves can maintain their quality for 2-3 years.

Customers have noted that DRUERA's cloves are noticeably fresher and less hard than grocery store cloves, which is a sign of quality.

Can cloves be used for anything besides cooking?

Yes. One traditional use is for temporary tooth pain relief. Simply place a whole clove near the affected area, as the eugenol in cloves has natural numbing properties.

One customer specifically mentioned using DRUERA's cloves for a toothache with good results.

Cloves are also popular in homemade potpourri, pomanders (oranges studded with cloves), and as a natural air freshener when simmered with water and other spices.

Some people add a few cloves to their tea for a burst of warm, spicy flavor and aroma.
